Juneteenth 2012
The Richwood Community Development Agency (RCDA) recently held its 14th annual JUNETEENTH celebration on June 9, 2012 at Richwood High School, Richwood, LA. This event provided a day (10 am until 4 pm) of fun, food, and education for participants of all ages. FREE hot dogs, nachos, snow cones, cotton candy, chips, and drinks were provided. There were games (horseshoes, dominoes, cards, volleyball, 3 on 3 basketball), a waterslide for the kids, musical and other entertainment, face painting, a Classic Car Contest, a live radio remote, and fun for all. There were hula hoop, dance, and watermelon eating contests. A highlight of the day was a Heritage Quiz Bowl that tested attendees’ knowledge of current governmental components and issues as well as African American History. There also were opportunities for attendees to get health information (provided by student nurses from the Ouachita Vocational Technical College) and dental care information (provided by Dr. Ollibeth Reddix). Each participant in the dental care session was provided appropriate supplies for home use that were donated by Patterson Dental Supply Company. The Bowie, Pleasant, Skinner, & Walker family held their reunion in conjunction with this year’s Juneteenth celebration. Plans are underway for next year’s 15th Annual Juneteenth Celebration. Groups interested in participating should contact any RCDA member.
